Caitlin Ray joined our projects in Camp Greenwoods
Please you us about some of your most enjoyable moments of the trip?
The amazing friends I made in the other Gotoco volunteers and having loads of fun with the kids
Which were the highlights of the lessons, cultural excursions and outdoor activities?
There were no lessons. The cultural excursion was to a water park and movie theatre. The outdoor activities were very fun and kept me active for the whole day. It was better than a classroom but unexpected.
How would you say the overall experience has benefited you?
It has given me more confidence, a load of new friends, future opportunities in China and has helped me realise more what I want to do in the future.
What was the best thing about your experience in China?
The people at Camp Greenwoods. Having a very structured day to get up for.
Would you recommend participating to a friend and if so why?
I would recommend a friend to go to Camp Greenwoods but not through Gotoco, no. Gotoco gave the impression I would be in a classroom teaching during and get weekends off- this was very untrue. Camp started at 7 and finished at 10pm. We also had a curfew of midnight. Often we would only get half a day off on the weekend. I disliked my first week at Camp because it was nothing like I had been told to expect and that wasn't fair to the camp.
I was also given the impression that we would have paid transportation to Yangshuo however Camp Greenwoods knew nothing of this and it was only through their kindness that they paid for my train ticket and I was able to go. The hostel in Yangshuo was cheap and dirty, the showers didn't work well and there were rats. I was extremely disappointed especially after finding out that staff at camp were being paid to do exactly what we were volunteering to do and so I thought Yangshuo would make up for that- it didn't.
I had an amazing time at Camp and wished I could afford to stay longer but Gotoco should have made the conditions of my placement clear as that was not what I signed up for.
