Please you us about some of your most enjoyable moments of the trip?
Getting to know the children was so worthwhile and the bonds formed over a few weeks really were special. However my favourite moments were shared with other teachers outside of school hours. For example, we flew to Sanya, 'the Hawaii of China' and went surfing, we hired motorbikes and travelled around and went to the Longji rice terraces.
Which were the highlights of the lessons, cultural excursions and outdoor activities?
I liked the freedom given to teachers in lessons. I was able to bring my own games to class and did not have to follow a strict schedule, but could inform the students about aspects of the English language and culture which we both found interesting. I also enjoyed archery with the children and the water fights.
How would you say the overall experience has benefited you?
I developed my skills to act as a leader (in class) and think on my feet and act confidently when required. I also learnt to adapt quickly to a completely different culture. Mainly, I learnt that, despite the language barrier and cultural differences, I was able to make real bonds and friendships with locals.
What was the best thing about your experience in China?
The other teachers with whom I shared the experience- we were all outgoing and adventurous and pushed each other to make it unforgettable. Also, some of the friendships made with TAs and students, even over short timespans, were very moving.
Would you recommend participating to a friend and if so why?
Yes, as at university we do get long summers and I feel like this opportunity enabled me to learn about myself, about another culture, have a holiday and gain a qualification all in one.
