Anna Berestova joined our projects in Zhuoyue English Summer Camp
Please you us about some of your most enjoyable moments of the trip?
Meeting other teachers and exploring the Yangshuo area by bike. Also, surprisingly or unsurprisingly, joining in with the kids when they made fun of other teachers or TAs.
Which were the highlights of the lessons, cultural excursions and outdoor activities?
The highlights of the lessons were seeing kids finally remember their lines for the play or finally achieve something. Or seeing a student improve over the course of their stay and see their English get so much better. It was always the little things!
The highlights of the cultural excursions was immersing into the local culture, trying to fit in despite sticking out like a sore thumb and attempting to converse with the locals in very broken Chinese.
The highlights of the outdoor activities was seeing kids in their natural element outside a classroom. I found that there were many more things I had in common with them and, it was easier to bond.
How would you say the overall experience has benefited you?
It showed me that I'm actually not that bad of a teacher and that kids can be likeable. I also learnt a little bit of Chinese and discovered I have a real passion for Chinese language and culture. I wish I stayed longer!
What was the best thing about your experience in China?
The scenery and the beauty of it. Also the amount of things to learn and get used to! I also met a lot of people and friends for life, it's very easy to bond when you're both panicking about your lesson plan!
Would you recommend participating to a friend and if so why?
Yes, because it's a fun way to expose yourself to something new and push your boundaries. You're thrown into a new country where you don't understand a single thing, but you learn a lot about yourself!
