Gotoco

Joshua Leslie joined our projects at Fokus Language school, Minnan University of Science and Technology in the summer of 2017. To view their feedback, please read on:

Could you please tell us about some of your most enjoyable moments of the trip?

When I finished teaching with Gotoco, I went to Yangshuo. One day, we all hired motorbikes and toured the countryside.

Every Friday, our school organized a waterfight with the kids.

I really enjoyed taking the lessons, as every lesson I thought of a creative way to explain an English concept.

I enjoyed the parents’ day at the end of the summer camp where the students show cased what they had learned.

Which were the highlights of the lessons, cultural excursions and outdoor activities?

The best part of the lessons were the activities I planned for the lesson.
I was using the PPP approach. The types of the activities I had were:

Slap down–I put the flashcards face up on the table and when I shouted a word, one member from each team had to slap down on the right flashcards. The kids absolutely loved this game, and never got bored of it, so i had it in every lesson.

When I was teaching about animals, I split the class into two teams and they had to build a giraffe out of newspapers and sellotape.

When i taught the senses, I brought in a feel box, played sound clips, and brought in some twists for the students to try.

How would you say the overall experience has benefited you?

It has opened my eyes to another culture, has given me some work experience, and also an experience in China I will never forget.

What was the best thing about your experience in China?

Making friends with Chinese locals
