Holly Cramer, Exeter University

Holly joined our programme in the town of Yangshuo in the summer of 2014, please read on for her feedback.

Can you tell me about some of your most enjoyable moments of the trip?

I really enjoyed teaching the older children as found them very inquisitive and eager to learn. In addition there were plenty of activities to do during the weekends, such as cycling. I really enjoyed being outside and exploring because the area was so beautiful.

Which were the highlights of the lessons, cultural excursions and outdoor activities?

I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend when we went climbing with one of the permanent teachers at the school. It was great to see Yangshuo with somebody who knew the area well, so knew the hidden tracks and paths to take.

How would you say the overall experience has benefited you?

I believe it has widened my cultural knowledge and encouraged my interest for further travel. It has increased my confidence and self-belief in being in charge of a large group of people. It has also allowed me to make friends that I imagine I will remain in contact with for a long time to come.

What was the best thing about your experience in China?

The entire experience was fantastic; from teaching the children, to weekend activities, trying new foods and meeting a wide range of people.

Would you recommend participating to a friend and if so why?

Yes I would certainly recommend the experience to a friend. I thoroughly enjoyed my time, met some fantastic people, and gained skills that I will be able to apply in my future. It was a great way for a totally inexperienced traveller to be able to travel to China, with the comfort of knowing there will be plenty of other students in the same situation.
